Time is on Your Side

Posted By: Personal Trainer Huntington | Fitness Together Cold Spring Hills on 11/22/2011

Fitness experts frequently recommend periods of dedicated rest between sets of strenuous exercise – especially heavy weight lifting. While most lifters are careful about taking a break between sets, many simply catch their breath, then continue. Not only does this inconsistent approach make it more difficult to structure your workouts, but it may also rob you of some of the benefits of your lifting routine.

Timing you rest periods is absolutely essential for making the most of your workouts, as spending too much time between sets can reduce muscle readiness, and excessively short breaks can impact their ability to heal. If you’re not keeping track of time between sets, pick up a stopwatch before you next gym visit, and ask an Fitness Together trainer to help you determine exactly how long you should rest before moving on.
