Grass-Fed Beef and Heart Healthy Benefits
It is becoming more common to see new terms being used in the meat department- "grass-fed" beef being the most prominent.
To be specific, grass-fed beef comes from cows that were fed primarily grass and other foraged foods, such as unprocessed grains.
Typically beef and dairy cows are fed a diet of processed grain, like corn, but now the difference in diets is known to change the fats and nutrients that you get from the different beef.
When other types of beef are compared with grass-fed beef, the heart healthy benefits of the grass-fed beef my include:
- Less Total Fat
- Higher levels of Omega-3 fatty acids-these are the heart healthy fats
- Higher levels of conjugated linoleic acid-a type of fat that is thought to reduce heart disease and cancer risks
Any beef that is 10 percent or less fat can be part of a heart healthy diet, even if it's not grass fed.
You should always talk to your doctor about adding more lean beef into your diet, even if it is grass-fed beef.
