David and Wilda Young
David & Wilda Young are the owner of Fitness Together, a one-on-one personal training studio located in the Preston Walk shopping center in Cary. David spent over 30 years in the environmental hygiene business serving the hospitality, food service and healthcare industries. The last 14 years, before retiring in 2008, were spent on the international side of the business traveling to the far corners of the world. If it sounds glamorous, it’s not! His lifestyle of being away from home for extended periods of time, constantly suffering from jet lag, eating poorly, and little exercise, led to a health challenge for him. He desperately needed help.
Wilda is a licensed physical therapist with over 30 years experience in all facets of physical therapy. The last 15 years she has focused on pelvic floor dysfunction in men, women and children. Her involvement in this field validated her belief in the connection between good health and strength training, cardio and nutrition. What she has found in years of practice, is that the medical system can “fix” most issues, but the system simply doesn’t have the time or expertise to truly get the patient “fit”. Her patients frequently inquired about a facility that was private with highly competent staff members who could truly help them achieve a healthy lifestyle.
David and Wilda desired the same type of facility but could not find such a place. The big box gyms (of which they were members but didn’t go) didn’t provide the privacy and personal attention they sought. Exercise equipment in the basement didn’t work. (They had that too). So, they opened their first Fitness Together in 2007 and took over the Preston Walk location in 2009. Neither of them are personal trainers themselves, but both are clients. They pay the going rate, just like everyone else. David says “this is to better understand the value of the service. If I got it for free, I wouldn’t know what it’s worth. And, it’s worth it!”
Wilda has always exercised and “took care of herself”, but immediately recognized the benefit of a certified personal trainer. She thought being a physical therapist, she knew what to expect. She developed a whole new respect for the profession and especially the FT Trainers. Her work-outs and nutritional advice from the trainers has truly enhanced her level of fitness. More energy, ability to better focus, better weight control without being hungry, and an overall better quality of life. She says “I simply could not have done this on my own!”
David’s challenge was a bit more daunting. But, with the help of the FT Trainers, the results were realized. The blood pressure dropped, weight was brought under control and overall fitness was greatly enhanced. “I really didn’t realize how bad I felt until I learned that feeling good was normal”, David says.
David and Wilda are fortunate to have as their manager Troy Rininger, a Certified Personal Trainer. Troy has both an undergraduate and graduate degree in Exercise Science in addition to vast experience. David says “he brings a lot of experience and knowledge to the studio. Also, his enthusiasm is contagious! He makes it fun!” Troy says “we’re not a gym; we’re a private training studio. We do one-on-one personal training in fully equipped private suites.” Each client has a specially designed program to help them achieve their health & fitness goals. Each session is by appointment only and thus no wasted time for our clients. David says “we’re not for everybody. If someone is looking for a social setting where the family & kids can hang out, that’s not us. We’re not an entertainment complex. No pool, rock climbing wall, or juice bar. We’re a place to ‘work out not hang out’. Our clients work out under the direct supervision of a certified personal trainer. It’s a safe environment, with hands on guidance to your health and fitness goals. Whether one utilizes FT or not, we encourage everyone to exercise regularly, watch what they eat and take care of themselves.”
