Facts on Cortisol

Cortisol – The Stress Hormone

What is it?

-Cortisol provides quick bursts of energy for survival reasons, heightened memory functions, bursts of increased immunity, lower sensitivity to pain and helps maintain homeostasis in the body.

Why should you control it?

-Continuous or chronic stress create prolonged high levels of cortisol in the blood stream which has negative effects of impaired cognitive performance, suppressed thyroid function, blood sugar imbalances, decreased bone density, decreased muscle mass, higher blood pressure, lower immunity and an increase in abdominal fat storage.

How do you control it?

-Cortisol can be controlled by removing yourself from the stressful situation, any stress reduction techniques (such as meditation), getting adequate sleep, and ensuring proper nutrition.

-After a workout it is essential to feed your body what it needs: protein and sugars (Surge). By taking care of this you will supress post workout cortisol and expediate the recovery process which in turn will expediate the results of your workout program.
