Dear Steve,

I wanted to take a few minutes to write you a note to thank you for your personal training services. I want to start by telling you about my personal history with diet and exercise so that you know how much of an impact you have had on my life. I also hope that you share this with other clients (or potential clients) who may be struggling with diet and exercise and might wonder if you could help them.

A few years ago, when I was almost 200 lbs., my doctor told me that I had "prediabetes" and that I better lose some weight. My mother has been on dialysis for years due to complications from her diabetes, so I am fully aware of the devastating consequences of diabetes. I tried everything to lose weight -- Weight Watchers, hiring a dietician, Slim-Fast, geez, even the cabbage diet! I finally found the Zone Diet, which seemed to work for me. While I was dieting, I walked, but I was too embarrassed to go to a gym. After I lost some weight, I joined a gym. I had never done weight training, but everything that I read said that weight training would help. So, I hired a personal trainer. I quickly learned that simply having an appointment with someone at the gym was going to be key to my success. I'm a busy, working, single mom. Like all busy moms, I put myself last on the agenda. Exercise seemed like an "extra" thing to do that only benefited me, but if someone else was counting on me to show up for exercise, it suddenly became more important. Also, I hate to say this, but for me, exercise, itself, isn't fun. It is hard and makes me sweat and takes time. It feels like a chore to me, about as fun as cleaning the floors and a lot harder! I really found that just having a personal trainer say, "good job" every now and then or notice that I'm making progress made all the difference in the world.

Since I discovered personal training a few years ago, I have now worked with about 5-6 trainers. I had a couple of trainers at a large gym, I trained at a very small gym, I once trained at a country club, and I had a trainer who came to my house. After I had lost about 50 lbs., I viewed training as a way to help me keep the weight off and stave off diabetes. I was happy with that. My prior trainers seemed very happy with that, too. My last trainer said that he would take me to the next level, but it never happened.

You are the first trainer that I've had who really did take me to the next level. When I came to you, I thought, "yeah, yeah, whatever...just train me so I don't gain weight." I, honestly, don't know how you do it. I am actually exercising LESS than I did before. I only train 2 days per week with you. I'd like to make the time for cardiovascular exercise, but most weeks, I go for a walk or do 30 minutes on the stair master only 1 or 2 days. And, I'm not actively dieting. After the long struggle to lose 50 lbs. and the sweet sound of my doctor saying that I've completely turned around my health, it's hard to look another diet in the face. Of course I have to watch what I eat, but I'm not counting calories at the moment. Yet, in the 3 months that I've been training with you, I've lost almost another 10 lbs. and I'm in a completely new size. In fact, for the first time in my life, I can see my muscles in my arms and back. People tell me that I look strong. You have helped me achieve a whole new sense of confidence that I didn't have before. I can even say that I look better in my 40s than I did in my 20s!

It is obvious that you are technically very competent. In all of the years that I've trained, I've never seen results like this. In addition, you have a great personality, which makes it very comfortable to train with you. It can be very intimidating to enter a gym. You understand that. You are always supportive and encouraging, and it is clear that you are invested in seeing each of your clients get to the next level, whatever that level might be. You get to know your clients, so we always have something to talk about during the workout (which makes it go by faster). Another key thing is that you seem to have an endless number of exercises. I am never bored and I always feel like you are tailoring my workout to me.
