The ‘Red Light’ Motivation

By Giles Wiley, Contributor

We’re almost into fall and everywhere we look we’re surrounded by temptations just waiting to throw us off our diet and exercise plan. How many BBQ’s, ice-cream socials, parties (with empty caloried beer and alcohol) did you attend this Summer?

As crazy as it may seem a lot of people will actually give up on their diet and exercise plan after the Summer – just when diet and exercise are needed most to ward off those extra calories! You see the mistake that many people make it that they try to be too perfect!

What you need to remember is that we all slip up on our healthy eating plans every now and again. We all miss a days training when we don’t feel quite up to it. We all have bad days or even bad weeks but you can’t let this totally derail your plans.

When discussing this subject with clients I like to use the analogy of running a red light…

If you are driving along and approach a light as it starts to turn red you have a split second to decide whether you can safely speed up and get through it in time or whether you need to hit the brakes.

Sometimes you misjudge it totally and end up running a red light, maybe you weren’t paying as much attention as you should have been or perhaps you just made a mistake.

Whatever the reason for running the red light you don’t just throw up your hands and say, “that’s it, I ran one red light I might as well give up and run every red light there is the rest of the day! Heck, I might as well give up totally and just run red lights the rest of the week!”

No. You accept it as a misjudgment, a slight mistake and you get back on track with your focused driving.

That’s the way you need to look at your diet and exercise plans. Sometimes you will slip up – as a matter of fact, I guarantee it! Just accept the mistake and put it behind you. Learn from it but don’t hold onto it. Get back on track as fast as you can and just keep moving forwards.

And, remember your Fitness Together trainer is here to help you stay on track the rest of the year.
