Personal Training Success Stories

Patti P. Ashburn, VA

I really enjoy coming to the studio, and working out with all the trainers.  Everyone is always pleasant, and very attentive.  They watch your movements to make sure you are doing the exercise correctly, so you don't hurt yourself.  They also push me to limits I didn't know I could reach.  Which is good, because even when I think I can exercise alone, I don't push myself hard enough to get me out of my comfort zone.   Even the people that train the same time I do offer that little bit of encouragement that everyone needs at one time or another.  (sweat is good!)

Denise talks about this "John" character, and frankly he scares me!  :)  I can't believe how you guys have transformed Denise!!!  She talks about you all the time, and wishes she could hire you to follow her around and be her personal trainer outside of the studio.  That is what is making me and my mom want to come and train with you!!!!

The reason I train at Fitness Together is because of Brian. It's been almost two years since I was fortunate enough to be paired up with him.

He helped me lose 20 pounds, and my strength and flexibility have improved dramatically.

Brian is an attentive trainer and always "present"; he is completely focused on his client. He keeps things interesting by introducing new exercises based on my level of fitness. The sessions are planned and adjusted according to my goals and strengths/weaknesses.

Brian also has a great attitude. If he's having a bad day or if he's tired, you'll never know. He is also reliable - he is NEVER late. And even at 5am, I never get the impression that he'd like to be anywhere but at the studio. This is a sign of a true professional.

The only area that could use improving is follow up. I would like to see assessments done on a regular basis. This will help keep me motivated and force me to take an honest look at areas that need improvement.

Brian has me writing in my food log again and told me he's going to start weighing me at every session. I definitely need this - just want to make sure he holds me to this!

Coming to FT did change my life. I am now able to flex and reach things I couldn't reach as little as three months ago. I've lost 15lbs, lots of inches, and stuff just fits me better. I'm getting a lot of compliments on how I look, so I'm very happy. I've got another 130lbs to go but I know I can do it with Fitness Together.

I love the support. I feel like everyone there is behind me and wanting me to succeed!

After only two visits I have found that I really like the fact that you find out who and what I am and my likes and dislikes. I like the ono on one, it makes me feel importand and that I matter.

I want to take a moment and say how much I'm enjoying the program as a whole. The trainers are all terrific. I am especially impressed with my main trainer, Brian. His energy level is awesome. I really look forward to my workout and feel great while I'm there and when I'm done. So glad I found you guys!

Fitness Together has changed my life in ways I never felt were possible.  I had never been a member of a gym, and never paid much attention to fitness. I have struggled with my weight my entire life and with the help of Fitness Together I believe this time I will be successful with my weight loss. The one-on-one private atmosphere initially drew me to this program and made me instantly feel comfortable which I never would have felt at a traditional gym. Fitness Together has helped me refocus on living a happier, healthier life through fitness and nutrition.  I'm incredibly proud of my progress over the last 4 months, and couldn't have done it without my always encouraging trainer John and the entire staff. Though there is still much to be done, I have come such a long way, and I'm excited about the rest of my journey towards a healthier me.

More importantly, the results especially over the last 4-5 months speak for themselves.  I've changed my entire lifestyle from eating better to working out an additional 2-3 days a week in addition to my 2 weekly sessions with John.  I used to go to bed very late regularly and hated waking up early.  Now I have no issues going to bed early and waking up at 5 am, although not always easy, is no longer an obstacle for me to work out.  I've lost 11 pounds since I started with FT and am stronger than I've ever been in my life.  I also look better (I can see my abs under that stubborn layer of fat around my waist) and am driven to get to a point where I can comfortably walk around in public with my shirt off (not there yet).  When I do I'll have John to thank.

When I started this journey I could barely make it up a flight of stairs without gasping for breath. Short walks to grab lunch at work winded me.

While on vacation in Thailand with a friend I had to ask the flight attendant for a seatbelt extender and my friend expressed a concern that she would hear me stop breathing while sleeping. We had a good cry together on the other side of the planet because of this experience. Upon my return I knew it was time for change; I feared the gym assuming I wouldn't know how to use any of the equipment. I didn't want to be the fat chick struggling to do what the skinny people did with ease! I wanted to be healthy, fit, and dare I dream . . . thin again. I soon found Fitness Together and met with Susan. After our initial meeting, I immediately knew this was the right fit for me.

Working out with Brian before sunrise has been awesome. Thanks to his personal training I have become healthier. I no longer am winded on those short walks at work. I can now walk miles and feel good about it.

Amazingly, I find myself running up the stairs now! I no longer wake up gasping for air which makes my friend very happy and proud. I have gained strength and I am often fascinated with the feel of my muscles. I have lost quite a few inches all around and have dropped 3 sizes so far. All these things excite me, and provide the motivation to continue on with my fitness journey. Training with Brian has been fun and noticing the little changes makes me so happy that I have he and Fitness Together in my life.

Now I actually have energy to play basketball and baseball with my son Noah, which is such a gift to both of us! I have come to realize how diet and exercise together are essential in making a healthy lifestyle change.

My journey is still evolving, and I am certain there will be bumps along the way, but the results I've reaped thus far are worth the effort. I feel a deep sense of gratitude for having both Fitness Together and Brian in my life; both have created a strong foundation for me to continue building a healthier life. It is a true blessing!

I'm 33 years old and never thought I'd be living a healthy, active lifestyle again. I'd been active the last two years of high school ('92-'93), weighing in at 174 lbs at the height of my participation on the Gar-Field HS Varsity Crew Team. From 1994 to 2005, I periodically experienced seasonal bursts of fitness and gained a deep enjoyment for running. Despite this love and various attempts at building muscle/losing weight, I hovered between 245 and 265lbs until 2006. In 2005 a serious back injury left me unable to perform even the lightest impact exercises. A visit to my orthopedist in 2006 had convinced me that it was time to lose weight and get back on the road to health. I started an exercise regimen and strict diet (3 meals/day, ~1600 calories) and over the following year lost 40 lbs, but never really gained any significant muscle tone.  By early 2008, I was hovering between 215 and 225lbs. The extreme diet and poor eating habits (spartan breakfast and lunch, large dinner, and no snacks) made it impossible for me to break the 215lb barrier or build any real muscle. For months I tried varying degrees of weightlifting and all the elliptical and light jogging my back would allow. This pattern continued until December 2009, when the birth of their my baby daughter Emma a few months earlier had finally motivated me and my wife to get into shape. Together we joined the Fitness Together family in hopes of achieving our fitness goals and instilling a love for health and activity that we could pass down to our children in the years to come. I started the program three months ago at 223lbs and 30.5% bodyfat. I was barely able to finish two 11 minute miles and could only complete 27 push-ups or 19 sit-ups in one minute. Today, I have dropped to 206lbs and reduced my body fat by approximately 11%. I can complete nearly 60 push-ups or 50 sit-ups in a minute, and warm up before each session with 15 minutes on the treadmill at an 8:30 mile pace. I've seen significant visual results as my body mass has changed, and am thoroughly enjoying the 15 lbs of new muscle I had never been able to see before. The back pain that used to rear it's ugly head during my early sessions has all but disappeared. Buying clothes has become enjoyable for the first time in over 20 years, and I've been able to seriously dedicate myself to running again. On March 28th, I completed the Van Metre 5-Miler with a time of 45:43, and will continue to train for the Army 10-Miler in the fall. Overall, I am more happy, energized, proud and excited than I have been in years, and I am looking forward to taking off the final 20 lbs by summer's end.

My complete lifestyle has been changed. It has been a long time now since I was trying to lose weight and that was a big issue not just to me but also to my family and friends as they were also equally concerned. I have lost few pounds and it is just the beginning. The thing I liked most about FT Ashburn is that the personal trainers take very good effort and INTEREST to help achieve your goal. There are many such studios and personal trainers who take this as just their job. As far as my experience goes the FT Ashburn staff is completely into you and takes equal INTEREST in you.

Eric K. Lansdowne, VA

Since joining Fitness Together, I have been able to sleep better, focus better and live a healthier life. My experience with all of your trainers has been professional, educational and motivational. Without them I would not have been able to obtain my interim goals. I can honestly say that if someone is truly interested in getting into better shape- Fitness Together is the place to do it."

Linda H. Ashburn, VA

What can I say, I have been ashamed about how I looked and my fitness level for a long time.  I would pay money to get my hair highlighted, get a manicure occasionally and then the day came when I decided to get braces to fix a couple of things I didn't like about my teeth.   When the braces came off, I loved my teeth but was still ashamed of me, the past athlete that played at the national and international level now standing in the mirror fat and out of shape.  It was time to put the money I was spending on the superficial things and attack the real me.  Because of my knowledge of fitness and training I was very picky and researched what was out there.  I needed coaches to hold me accountableFitness Together has been that place. It was so hard at first trying to do the physical things in front of the trainers, knowing that once I was quite quick, strong and fit but all they saw was an old lady that couldn't even balance on Bosu ball.  Overcoming my ego and being so ashamed of how I let myself go over the years, has been the hardest part.  I couldn't look in the mirror doing the exercises when I began now I can, it still isn't pretty but it's coming.  The trainers I have worked with have become friends that have pushed, encouraged, listened to me and laugh with me.  They are there to be your other set of eyes to make sure you are performing correctly and to encourage you to do what you need to do when you leave them so you as an individual can really make the difference in yourself.  If they see that you are busting you butt daily they go above and beyond to bust their butt for you.

I have a long way to go, but I know it will happen with the help of my friends at Fitness Together.  I want my children to see how their mother looked before they came into the world and see how hard and consistent she is working to achieve her goals.  I can't think of a better gift that I can give my girls and ultimately me!  Life is good, even without cheese balls and ham gravy!!!

Since I started my training program here at Fitness Together, I've been forced to take an honest look at the choices I've made over the years that caused me to become overweight and sedentary, and ultimately, unhappy.

One of the first questions I was asked when I signed up was "What are your fitness goals?" I blurted out that I wanted to run a marathon. I instantly regretted stating my seemingly unattainable goal out loud, because by doing this I was now committed to actually doing one. My fear of failure and lack of confidence had prevented me from starting a training program in the past.

I was tired of making excuses for my weight gain and lack of exercise and was finally ready to commit to a training program. It is important to me to be a positive role model for my kids. I want them to see their mother enjoying physical activity so that they too can experience the joy of being fit and healthy. Training with Brian allowed me to become a person my children can be proud of. Brian makes every workout challenging and caters each session to my fitness goals. With his support and expertise, I have lost 20 lbs and gained an incredible amount of strength. Brian is always positive and enthusiastic. I really look forward to our training sessions because I know he'll always have something new and exciting for me to do.

Another positive outcome of my training is that other people have told me I've been an inspiration to them. I can't tell you how good this makes me feel. I just ran the Marine Corps Marathon (my first marathon ever) and signed up for the Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach this spring. Who knows, I may even train for a triathlon. At this point, I think I can do just about anything.

For as long as I can remember, I have been active.  I was on the tennis court 3 to 5 days a week, in the gym lifting weights twice a week, and running or walking 4 miles multiple times a week.  This was usually the minimum activity I would do each week.  It was my way of balancing being a stay at home mom, taking care of three kids and a husband and still doing something for myself; to have fun and take care of me.  That is, until last May, when I blew out my entire right knee while playing tennis.  Even before the MRI results came back, I knew I had done some major damage because the right leg could not support any weight, whatsoever, without buckling completely in half, immediately following the injury.  Sure enough, the doctor said I had hit the trifecta, so to speak.  I had damaged all three major areas including, tearing the acl, tearing the meniscus and spraining both the medial and lateral ligaments.  Reconstruction surgery was the answer.  I was told it would take 4 to 6 months to heal.

My first concern was if I would ever walk normally after all this, then after the doctor assured me I would, my BIG concern was how in the world was I going to survive the next 9 months without tennis and all the other activity I am used to (three months before surgery and 6 months after).  The answer to the BIG question turned out to be Fitness Together and Brian and Susan! My husband and I discussed the idea of using a personal trainer that would work with my doctor and physical therapist to help me recover and to give me a way to stay active, not to mention occupy all the new free time I now had with the kids back in school and no tennis!  He saw signs for Fitness Together and so the journey began.  I met with Susan before my surgery to lay out the game plan, then the week following surgery, I began my sessions with Brian twice a week.

My doctor has been amazed at my progress.  I am 43 years old and he says my recovery has been way better than what he has seen in teenagers.  Brian can attest to how weak the joint and muscles in my right leg were when we first started compared to where they are now, almost four months after surgery.  Last week, I actually ran 3 miles in less than 30 minutes, which I didn't think I would ever be able to do again, figuring running would be a thing of the past.  I could have never reached this point in my recovery without the help of Brian and Susan and Fitness Together.  You not only helped me get back my active lifestyle, but you gave me stress relief and peace of mind during the recovery period as well!!!!

I can't thank you enough!
